Surgical Instructions
At Purple Plum Dentistry, it is very important to our team that you feel confident and well-informed regarding every step of the treatment process. Below, you’ll find information about what to expect when undergoing oral surgery here in Falls Church. This is meant to be just a starting point, so please don’t hesitate to contact us with further questions and concerns so that we can put your mind fully at ease.
Before Anesthesia
There are a couple of important steps that patients need to take before undergoing anesthesia. First, avoid eating or drinking anything at least eight hours before your surgery is set to begin. If you smoke, plan to not smoke for at least 12 hours before the surgery.
Additionally, you will need a trusted friend or family member to accompany you to the practice and also drive you back home once you’ve been released. Do not wear dentures, contact lenses, or any jewelry to the appointment.
Do you regularly take certain medications? Make sure to discuss your dental surgery with your general physician and confirm that it is safe to continue taking them.
Multiple Tooth Extractions
While the removal of a single tooth is a relatively simple process, extracting multiple teeth is far more extensive. This procedure requires our team to carefully reshape the patient’s jawbone in order to prepare it for a custom-made denture. It is likely that you will experience the following side-effects after this procedure:
- Oral swelling within the mouth and possibly around the eyes too
- Discoloration in the skin around the eyes (this can often be alleviated with a warm compress)
- Sore muscles near the extraction site, which may lead to an uncomfortably sore throat as well
- Dry/cracked skin occurring at the corners of your mouth
In most cases, we will schedule a follow-up visit within 48 hours afterthe surgery to confirm that you’re healing well and assess the severity of any post-surgery symptoms.
